Participation of the Delegation of the Republic of Tajikistan in the 59th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Development Bank

On 4 May this year, the 59th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Development Bank commenced in Samarkand, Republic of Uzbekistan, with the participation of the delegation of the Republic of Tajikistan led by the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan, Kholiqzoda Hokim Hikmatullo.

The meeting, held under the theme “Crossroads of Progress: Advancing the Region’s Connected Future,” brings together more than 4,000 experts from over 100 countries, including representatives of governments, international financial institutions, banks, and leading companies.

The agenda includes issues related to digital and green transformation, climate resilience, development of production and supply chains, food security, and other key priorities.

In his remarks at the opening ceremony, the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan Hokim Kholiqzoda highlighted the current state and prospects of cooperation with the Asian Development Bank, the implementation of economic reforms and joint efforts in this direction, as well as the continuation of financial and technical support for priority infrastructure projects in the sectors of energy, transport, education, agriculture, irrigation, environment, tourism, and emergency response.

It was emphasized that amid increasing external pressures on the global economy, including escalating tensions in the Middle East, rising volatility in energy and financial markets, and disruptions in global supply chains, there is a growing need to strengthen support from development partners to maintain macroeconomic stability and sustain ongoing reforms.

The importance of addressing climate change, advancing the green economy, and attracting investment into strategic infrastructure was also underlined as key components of the country’s sustainable development agenda.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the First Deputy Prime Minister of Tajikistan Hokim Kholiqzoda held a meeting with the President of the Asian Development Bank, Mr. Masato Kanda.

During the meeting, the parties focused on the projects and priority areas of cooperation identified during the meeting between the Founder of Peace and National Unity - Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Emomali Rahmon, and ADB President Masato Kanda in March this year in Dushanbe.

The parties also discussed the mobilization of financing for the continued construction of the Rogun Hydropower Plant, coordination of joint efforts, and the potential mobilization of the Bank’s financial and technical resources to mitigate the impact of the Middle East conflict on the national economy, as well as to address the consequences of natural disasters and restore infrastructure.

It is worth noting that since 1998, the Asian Development Bank has financed 200 projects in Tajikistan totaling USD 2.9 billion, of which more than USD 2.0 billion has been provided in the form of grants.

Currently, 20 public investment projects with a total value of USD 931.7 million are being implemented in Tajikistan with ADB financing, covering sectors such as energy, transport, education, agriculture, irrigation, environment, emergency situations, and tourism.
